Promoting Emission Reduction: BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi Students Introduce Solar-Powered Streetlights in School Area

Promoting Emission Reduction: BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi Students Introduce Solar-Powered Streetlights in School Area

Bekasi, October 30, 2024 – Renewable energy, recognised for its environmentally friendly nature, is emerging as a solution to address the challenges posed by conventional energy sources. Among the many examples of renewable energy is solar energy, which harnesses sunlight directly from nature. With a strong drive to advance renewable energy, Bryan, a 12th-grade student at BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi, embarked on research into the utilisation of solar energy. From an early age, Bryan demonstrated a keen interest in developing renewable energy solutions to replace fossil fuels, which are known for their long-term negative impacts on the environment. During his research, Bryan received support from his science teacher, Mr. Nugroho, and collaborated with school staff, Mr. Khalim. Mr. Nugroho explained that fostering collaboration between students and teachers or staff is part of BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi’s approach to providing students with hands-on learning experiences alongside experts in specific fields. “In line with our vision to nurture and empower the community, every member of BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi consistently seeks creative ways to deliver innovative contributions that positively impact society. Therefore, we fully support Bryan’s enthusiasm in advancing solar energy research, which has now been successfully implemented,” Mr. Nugroho stated. The research culminated in the installation of four solar-powered streetlights around the parking area of BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi. This initiative aligns with the school’s commitment to promoting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). “In developing solar-powered technology, I was fortunate to receive full support from the school. This allowed me to go beyond theoretical learning and apply my research practically, leading to the installation of these functioning solar-powered lights,” Bryan shared. The technology developed through this project has the potential to produce 1.3 MWh of electricity annually, saving 22 tons of carbon emissions over 20 years and conserving 26 MWh of electricity production within the same timeframe. Through this initiative, BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi aims to pave the way for further research in renewable energy while providing opportunities for students and research clubs to engage in real-world experiments. The solar-powered streetlights represent the school’s initial step in integrating renewable energy into its daily operations, supporting the global mission to reduce carbon emissions and develop sustainable solutions. Ms. Maria Karah, Principal of BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi, expressed pride in the achievement, emphasizing the school’s commitment to supporting student development in research, innovation, and other fields. “We are immensely proud of Bryan’s research. At such a young age, he has demonstrated a strong curiosity for renewable energy development. We hope this inspires more innovations in the future,” Karah explained. BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi is part of BINUS SCHOOL Education, which boasts over 26 years of experience in school education. Committed to shaping future leaders through quality and holistic education, BINUS SCHOOL Bekasi continuously supports its students’ potential, enabling them to discover new horizons and make a positive impact on society.

Serpong, 25 October 2024 – In the fast-evolving educational landscape, BINUS SCHOOL Serpong is embracing change and positioning itself as a leader in educational innovation in Indonesia. As AI, automation, and evolving career landscapes reshape the world, BINUS SCHOOL Serpong is preparing students not just for today’s challenges, but for a future where their teammates may not even be human. The new Director of BINUS SCHOOL Serpong, Gerald Donovan says that the era of memorising facts and figures is behind us, and BINUS SCHOOL Serpong is preparing all the students for a world where they will need to continuously learn, adapt, and innovate. With over 30 AI tutors integrated into the learning environment, BINUS SCHOOL Serpong is pioneering personalised learning, allowing each student to learn at their own pace. Donovan highlights the transformative potential of AI in education. “In traditional classrooms, teaching often targeted the middle of the class—some students were bored, others overwhelmed. AI helps us challenge each student just beyond their current ability, fostering real growth and engagement,” said Donovan. Combining Academic and AI Donovan recognises that the pathways to success have shifted dramatically with the rise of AI and automation. such as medicine, engineering, and business—some of the careers traditionally seen as stable—are among the most likely to be impacted by AI. “At BINUS SCHOOL Serpong, we’re preparing students for the unknown future by teaching them to think critically, collaborate, and embrace lifelong learning,” said Donovan. This semester, BINUS SCHOOL Serpong is rolling out a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program for students in Grade 4 and above, with a long-term vision of integrating technology into every classroom. The school has also invested heavily in teacher training and infrastructure to ensure a smooth transition and maximum impact. Despite the shift toward AI and technology, BINUS SCHOOL Serpong remains grounded in its core SPIRIT values—Striving for excellence, Perseverance, Integrity, Respect, Innovation, and Teamwork. These are the values that machines cannot replace. “In a world of instant gratification, perseverance is especially crucial. We’re teaching our students that nothing worth having comes easy, and that’s a lesson technology alone can’t deliver,” said Donovan. As BINUS SCHOOL Serpong continues to evolve, Donovan is confident that the school will stay ahead of the curve. This is the third industrial revolution for education, BINUS SCHOOL Serpong is not just preparing students for exams, but also preparing students for life, equipping them with the skills and resilience they need to thrive in a world of constant change. One of the students from BINUS SCHOOL Serpong, Meghan Lee Hidayat, mentioned that the learning approach at BINUS SCHOOL is designed to be both enjoyable and relevant to the current era. “At school, we often have exciting new experiences, such as using AI technology to assist in the classroom. Although technology plays a significant role in our learning, fundamental values such as respect, perseverance, and integrity are still instilled in us,” said Meghan. Student Well-Being Programme  In addition to technology, student well-being is a key focus of the Student Well-Being Programme. The Student Well-Being Programme focuses on supporting students emotionally, socially, and academically. It provides a system of tiered support to help manage behavioral issues and create a positive school environment where students can thrive in all areas of life. A key part of the program is the tiered behavioral management system, which offers different levels of support based on individual student needs. This helps students develop positive behaviors and life skills like time management, emotional control, and communication through personal management workshops. Aligned with the Cambridge Primary Well-Being Curriculum Framework, the program also teaches life skills to help students handle everyday challenges. Overall, it aims to ensure that students grow both academically and personally, building resilience and social skills for a balanced and thriving future. By combining technology with well-being support, BINUS SCHOOL Serpong creates a balanced environment where students thrive both academically and emotionally, ensuring they are discovering new horizons and well-prepared for future success.
